When children are free to explore, imagine, and have fun, they grow in every way — socially, emotionally, and intellectually. Our co-op preschool is built on the idea that learning happens best through play, and we invite families in the Oakland area to discover what makes our community so special.

The Oakland Cooperative Playschool (OCP) is a place where the parents and the teacher work side-by-side to create a positive environment for children. We’ll grow and learn together through play, exploration, creativity in art, music and literature. To strive to develop imagination, growth in self-esteem, and promote mental, physical and social development. The playschool is considered a preliminary step to the kindergarten experience.
Beginning in the 80’s, Oakland cooperative playschool is a place where parents have the opportunity to be hands on involved with their child’s first introduction to education. Year in and year out, along with the certified teacher and school board comprised of volunteer parents, the school is a non-profit relying on small parent- led fundraisers, volunteer parent grant writer and donations from our wonderful community.
The play-based curriculum, accompanied with field trips and events designed for family inclusion, helps kids and parents alike as they prepare to enter the next school year. Life- long bonds are formed here, between children and parents alike.

Our New President has been a parent with the playschool for four years. She was class coordinator while each of her children attended the co-ops’s 3’s and 4’s classes during their two year learning journey with OCP.
When she’s not working night shift at the hospital, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, lunch with friends, reading, and staying home to hang out with her pets. Though her children have grown and moved on to elementary school, she has chosen to stay and help keep the school running.
